Ah hah, name that bug

bug.jpg Warning! This post is not for the faint of heart. We have been seeing this insect with about 14 legs with a long skinny body, with tails coming out both sides. It is about 1 1/2-2 inches long and very vast. SO far it has been on our dinning room wall and bathrrom floor. It looks like a mix between a spider and a centipede. I have lived in old houses my whole life and have never seen it. Last night we captured one to look it up on the internet. It seems that out house is home to a house centipede. Apparently they are very common, and more helpful than harmful. They don’t bite and eat spiders and other bugs. So the mystery is solved. But before I knew I was thinking that we had found a new species.

We just moved into a new apartment, which happens to be in a very old building. I’ve been seeing these guys on and off since we’ve moved in but have only managed to catch three. The largest one so far was 1.5 inches! I too thought I had uncovered a new speicies since I couldnt find anything on the net about them.I am a bug lover, but let me tell you, these things made me nervous the first time I saw them! They are just so fast and strange looking. I thought maybe they were cocroach-like things since I’ve noticed they are busier at night when the house gets quiet. Also, they like being near moist areas such as sinks or tubs or shower floors/curtains. Our shower curtain has the two layers and a couple of times I shook it and they fell out from between. Also, my husband has a bad habbit of leaving wet towels on the floor. DONT leave any moist or wet towels on the floor! When you pick it up, they will come scurrying out.So far, I always see the smaller ones near the wet areas of the house and the bigger ones on the living room walls. I have yet to see an enormous one near a sink so I’m thinking that maybe the bigger/older they are, the less afraid they are. Then they explore farther than the young ones. Its all very intersting to me but I really could do without them. A bug is a bug, and most bugs are fine. If hes eating other bugs thats even better!! But waking up to see him sitting on the bedroom wall….. its a little much for me. Does anyone know how to spray for them? They seem very clever and hide in drains and stuff so I’m wondering if it would even work? I’ve used draino and I saw less of them for a while but now its cold weather and the house is nice and warm. They seem to be turning up again. Not alot, just a few. I just dont want “a few” turning into “many.”
