Mums the word

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

I have been introduced to the somewhat joy of landscaping now that we own a house. It is slowly growing on me. I learned this year what a mum is, and how to care for the plant. You see they grow early in the spring but you are supposed to cut them back the whole summer until the fall. In the fall then you let them grow and they get big. They make these pretty flowers, but don’t really smell good. Well I didn’t know this so my mums got out of control mid June and almost died until my mother in law (thanks Linda) told me to cut them back and they might grow. And grow they did. Now we are enjoying pretty purple mums. Yeah

Adventures is pet owning land

So my family always had a dog or a cat while I was growing g up as a kid, but I never was really the one in charge of making sure that the pet didn’t die. So now we have a dog and Jason and I are responsible for its well being. IF we don’t feed it or let it outside it is totally our fault. A strange realization came upon us, now we have to look after something other than ourselves. Its fairly humbling really. and fun all at the same time. A funny story about our sweet boy Moses. I had just come home from getting a spray on tan. If you are familiar with those kind of tans you know that you are supposed to get wet for 6 hours or the tan will rub off. Well my sweet boy came to greet me after I got home and gave me a kiss square on my cheek and rubbed off my tan in a spot about the size of a quarter. Needless to say it was a lesson.

Welcome to the family

As the pictures show below we have finally made good on all our promises to get a greyhound. His name is Moses and sometimes we call him Moe for short. He is a 70 pound male with a lot of energy for a grey. He greets us with a happy wagging tail in the morning. He has a good appetite and scarfs his food. He will fit in well. He keeps walking around the house and does circles just to sniff out everything in his new house. Really a sweet dog. Come by and see him sometime.

Mariam is amazing

Friday, October 13th, 2006

For the past year I have been meeting with my old lady friend. Her name is Mariam and she is 83. She goes to my church. She lives by herself in a house. She still mows her own lawn, and does her own mulching. Really she is amazing. Spunky as ever. She makes me chicken salad with pickles and hot earl grey tea in a pretty tea pot each time we meet. Another reason I admire Mariam is the fact that she is stubborn. The other day she needed a lead pipe that was apart of a former water pump in her backyard removed. Someone was supposed to come and do it for her but never made it. So one day she got out her handy hacksaw and sawed through 1 inch lead piping, and 1/2 re-barb. She proudly showed me the scar on her thumb as proof of her hard work. I was like, awesome. I hope I am as a cool as Mariam when I grow up

Bow Crazy Jo “Ann”

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006

Welcome to October. In true fall spirit and in the honor of our first fall in the new house we (mostly Rachel) decided to decorate the house for fall/Thanksgiving. I cut coupons out of the Sunday paper to JoAnn Fabrics and we were on our way. I was really searching for a cute fall wreathe for our back door. After looking at the selection available we decided to dare to be crafty and assemble our own super cool fall wreathe. So we picked up the different pieces and began putting together a pretty awesome wreathe. This lady, an employee stocking the shelf was totally spying on us. She came up to us after about a minute and said, “You need a bow.” (imagine a nazi tone with an old lady voice) She lead us to an isle with pretty fall ribbon and stood there until we awkwardly took some ribbon. She walked and away and we put it back because this wasn’t supposed to be a country living wreathe it was a super cool trendy wreath. Anyway, we were sorta intimated by her. She kept watching us and it seemed like she was following us down the isles spying if we had bought a stupid bow. So we went to the check out and as the girl was ringing us up one of the flowers didn’t have a price tag. She paged over the system, “Anne to the front for a price check.” At that point I was like, crud, she is going to see that we didn’t get a bow and she is going to make us buy one. Well she came and helped us out with the price and then said in that voice, “You didn’t buy a bow, did you?” and walked away. Needless to say we were cracking up in the parking lot and glad to have survived without a bow.
