So I am helping my orientee grad RN admit her first patient to our nursing floor. The patient is in no way cooperative. The pt did not allow the ER to take any vitals and it took more than 5 people holding the pt down to draw labs. Mom warned us that the pt pinches, bites, throws things, hits and kicks. Translation = one tough dude. Anyway, as we are finishing all the paper work the new RN goes to get vitals. The pt allows her to get all of them except her oxygen saturation which requires a probe on the finger and to hold still. After about 2 mins of trying the pt gets very agitated and we stop. Things were going amazingly smooth and I was thinking that the ER was over reacting. I am hanging out on the other side of the room getting ready to take out the portable computer as I see a flying object race towards my head. And then bam, an explosion of formula pours over my head and down my scrubs. Its seems that the pt is fairly combative and decided to throw the bottle across the room at my face hard enough to break open and pour all over me. My hair was caked, clothes soaked and I smelled like nutren jr. However I was cracking up and glad that I still had all my teeth. Guess the ER wasn’t over reacting.
