World Malaria Day

Today, April 25th, is World Malaria Day.

Deadly malaria is spread through the unfelt bite of a mosquito, and it claims more than 1 million innocent lives each year.

What’s especially tragic is that malaria is both preventable and treatable, but many parents lack the basic tools and medicines to keep their children safe and healthy.

Can you imagine their pain? Their frustration?

Thankfully, God’s hand is at work. World Vision has been blessed with donations of more than $176 million in life-saving medicine and supplies to fight malaria and other child killers. To keep even more children healthy, they’ve also received $25 million in government grants for malaria prevention.

In honor of World Malaria Day on April 25, please consider giving a gift which multiplies 8 times to fight this deadly disease and keep children healthy.

Aimie’s Recital

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Aimie had her junior recital this past Saturday. She was amazing, even though she was running a fever and fighting off the stomach flu. You would have never guessed. Here are a few pictures and you can check out the entire album here : Aimie’s recital

Way to go sister! You have an amazing, beautiful talent. I am proud of you.

The stage where they sing is beautiful. Here is Aimie with the baby grand. Don’t you love her blue dress? It was stunning!

This was the last song (and the only one in English) that she sang. It was called “Glitter and be Gay”. The whole time Aimie sang about her love of jewelry and kept putting it on and dancing around. It was true Aimie style and very cute. The audience was totally into it.

Here is Aimie and Brad. They shared the concert with a 1/2 hour each. It was nice because Brad would sing 2-3 songs and then it was Aimie’s turn. You both did an excellent job.

Happy Earth Day and how to Save the Earth: lesson 3

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Fellow citizens, I am sure you were eagerly awaiting today to celebrate Earth Day. Here are a few tips to do this day up right from Green Way Supply:

  • Recycle paper, plastic, glass and aluminum waste at your home and office. Remanufacturing these recyclable products saves resources and landfill waste.
  • Turn off lights when you leave a room and use CFC light bulbs to lower your energy bills.
  • Properly inflate your tires, keep your car tuned up and car pool to reduce you transportation costs.
  • Plant a tree to help clean the air, provide cooling shade and habitat.
  • Use programmable thermostats to lower your home energy use and save money.
  • Check furnace and car filters, it improves energy efficiency.
  • Wash clothes in cold water and use a clothes line to air dry them.
  • Fill toilet tanks with a plastic bottle or two and reduce water use.
  • Unplug unused appliances and use power strips to reduce phantom power use
  • Compost vegetable and yard waste to reduce what you throw out each week.
  • Use rain barrels to collect water for your garden.
  • Be mindful of the cleaners and chemicals you use in your home so you can reduce harmful indoor o-zone.
  • Use reusable water bottles because water bottles require more that 1.5 million barrels of oil a year and 85% of them end up in land fills.

Visit with Andee

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

I had the pleasure of visiting my friend Andee from nursing school and her 2 lovely children last week. Benjamin, who is 2, was lots of fun. He is very cute and talking a lot. I also met Anna, her 6 week old daughter. She was awake at first but snoozed most of the afternoon. I had a great time hanging out with Andee and then going to a yummy Chinese restaurant. Then we took Benjamin to ride the train in the mall. Here are some pics of the day. Thanks again Andee for letting me visit. I am so glad that we are still friends!

Happy 2nd Birthday Jack

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

This past weekend we headed to Chicago to celebrate our nephew’s second birthday. Unbelievable that he is 2, isn’t it? The party was Elmo/Sesame Street themed. Our family was joined by some cute playgroup friends. Jack had a blast and got a lot of cool presents including a Purdue trike and wooden work bench complete with tools. Here are some shots from the day. Happy Birthday Jack!!!

The Score

Monday, April 7th, 2008

I have had a couple requests to elaborate on the current status of the mice and my traps. I am happy to report that the score is now …

Mice:1 Rachel: 1

The mice got their point by making an old fashioned trap that Jason set downstairs disappear. Seriously, we can’t find it any where. Way to go mousy.

I get my point because the electric chair worked and the body count is 1. I am hoping that this needless death will send a strong message to our mouse community. If you stay out of Rachel’s stuff you stay away from possibly harmful electricity. But if we are basing this on my luck they are probably forming a posse to tie up Moses when we are gone. There is no way they could ever get him through the doorway though - which puts me at ease. Anyway…

I’ll keep you posted on how it pans out.
